Volunteer Guidelines

We understand the profound transition and change that comes about when we are bereaved or are a recipient of our service.  As a best practice, we have a waiting time before your application can be accepted.

For those bereaved within the last year, we ask that you take the time for one year to grieve before applying. We also require those receiving service to wait three months from the last day of service before applying.

An administrative volunteer is available to help staff members with such things as filing, mailings, packing items for events, etc.

Bereavement Support

Volunteers help the Bereavement Team facilitate adult and children/youth groups.

Compassionate Listener Program

Trained bereavement volunteers support bereaved clients 1:1 via telephone.

Day Hospice Program

Program participants are those living with progressive life-threatening illnesses. They spend their day with us involved in activities and enjoy lunch together. Volunteers support the program and clients.

Volunteers work in a team beautifying the hospice grounds – tilling, planting, weeding.

Volunteers, under the direction of the Kitchen Manager, help with cooking, baking, dishwashing, cleaning and serving meals to residents and day program participants.

Volunteers at the reception desk are the first person to greet visitors at the hospice, those visiting a family member, attending a group or meeting, etc. The reception volunteer answers the telephone directing calls to the correct staff person, forwards and takes messages. The reception volunteer may also help staff with odd administrative jobs at the desk.

Residential Hospice

Volunteers visit with residents in the hospice at bedside. They are available to the resident for conversation, reading, just sitting quietly, etc.

Special Events/Fundraising

Volunteers are recruited for Signature Events, Third Party Events and events hosted at the hospice throughout the year to assist the Events Team. This could be anything from helping at an event with registration, operating a booth, payment check out, live auction monitor, etc.

Volunteer Visiting

Volunteers are matched with a client in the community who is living with a life-limiting illness, and their loved ones. The volunteer offers emotional and respite support – this role does not involve medical support.

Volunteer Time Off Programs

What Is VTO

Workplace Volunteer Time Off (VTO) programs provide employees with the opportunity to contribute to causes they care about without having to choose between work and making a positive impact in their communities. Do you not know if something like this exists where you work? It is as easy as asking. We have provided a short message to help you get started.

Get Started
