Finance Director

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Finance is responsible for overseeing the financial health and strategy of the organization.

This role includes managing budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and compliance to ensure financial sustainability and efficiency.

The Director of Finance provides strategic financial leadership, supports executive decision-making, and ensures adherence to all regulatory requirements and internal controls.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership & Accountability

  • Serve as a visible and credible ambassador, fostering increased external and internal awareness while promoting the Organization’s vision, mission, and values, including diversity and inclusion
  • Provide support to all stakeholders including staff, volunteers, board members and the community)
  • Ensure all legal, safety and ethical risks are proactively mitigated; promptly address and report any emerging risks to the team
  • Maintain a proactive, responsive, and effective approach to conflict resolution, team collaboration and workplace safety
  • Adhere to all organizational policies, including but not limited to Health and Safety, confidentiality, conflict of interest, privacy and code of conduct
  • Will attend all required staff meetings, board meetings, and organizational events
  • Serve as a Goodwill Ambassador at all times, representing the organization with professionalism and integrity
  • Develop and implement long-term financial strategies to support the organization’s growth, sustainability, and mission-driven initiatives
  • Supervise and support finance team members, including training as needed

Finance

  • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial submissions, including variance analysis and Ministry data collection.
  • Audit accounts for month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Conduct periodic data reviews, respond to financial data requests, and provide support for external audits, ensuring full compliance with audit requirements
  • Provide oversight and feedback to maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor financial risks, oversee investment policies, and ensure full compliance with financial regulations, tax laws, and funding agreements
  • Safeguard the financial integrity of the organization and proactively address potential risks.
  • Manage restricted assets, ensuring proper allocation, compliance with funding requirements, and accurate financial reporting
  • Lead annual Ministry budget reporting, along with monthly and quarterly Ministry updates, including Ministry funding reports, financial reporting, and capital budget expenditures.
  • Collaborate with the internal leadership team to provide financial oversight and insights for facility-related budgets.
  • Oversee financial systems and technology, ensuring efficient data management, reporting accuracy, and continuous improvement in financial processes
  • Participate in the Finance Committee and oversee all aspects of finance and treasury management and provide financial insights and reports to support data-driven decision-making
  • Develop and implement procedures and best practices for financial transactions across hospice locations

 

Pediatrics Project

  • Serve as the financial lead, overseeing bridge financing, funding, loan compliance, and budget expenditures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (required)
  • CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant) designation (strongly preferred)
  • 7–10 years of progressive financial management experience, preferably in a nonprofit, healthcare, or public sector environment
  • Experience in budgeting, financial planning, and analysis, including variance analysis and financial forecasting
  • Proven leadership experience, including managing and mentoring finance teams
  • Experience working with regulatory bodies, audits, and financial compliance in a nonprofit or government-funded setting
  • Familiarity with grant management and Ministry reporting

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong financial acumen with expertise in financial reporting, internal controls, and risk management
  • Proficiency in financial software such as QuickBooks or similar platforms
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities, with the ability to align financial strategy with organizational goals
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills for engaging with executives, board members, and external stakeholders
  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards, including fund accounting and government grant compliance (if applicable)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a dynamic environment
